Meeting a new friend

Here's a day at the park with Sanya and Shane's little girl Kylie!

Preparing for his first trip to Colorado!

Backpack on, Thomas trains in, he's ready to fly (he just needs to get dressed first)!

Channeling Julie Andrews

Almost sounds just like her. He just needs the Von Trapps in the background...

Back from Trek Tri-Islands 2006

It took 140 miles, some icky rain, some screamin' downhills and a few slick roads, but Team K.O.B. [stands for Knock Out Baristas, even though only David is capable of making a good cup of coffee] completed the American Lung Association of Washington's somewhat misnamed Trek Tri-Islands. As fellow rider and expert talker Roof Rack Charlie told us, we actually cross six -- count 'em, six! -- islands on this ride.
Enjoy the photos from our three days in the saddle!

More Tri-Islands

Here comes David into Port Gamble!

Followed by Sharon (and some big honkin' SUV)

There are Paul and Karen

And hey, that's me! Okay, break's over. Let's hit the road.

Crossing the Hood Canal bridge

With the exception of that wicked slippery downhill at the start of day 3, the Hood Canal bridge is the scariest part of the ride. There's Sharon, then Paul, then Amy.

The first official rest stop

Paul keeps Karen's spirits up.

Who's that badass?

Just laying around. Amy took her relaxation a bit too seriously and napped for almost an hour.

Paul's booty call!

Rest stop two: Bananaland! And early the next day...

See that look of sheer pain on Paul's face? It's not from 45 miles of hills. It's sheer pain.

Yes, that's a monkey on his back...er, bike. The current theory among Team KOB is that he was hoping to be able to have a human on the back of the bike by ride's end. Didn't seem to work...

C'mon David, show us your pecs!

Yes it's dark. It's 6:30 in the frickin' morning, fer cryin' out loud. At least the ferry was on time.

Tri-Islands Day 2

Sunrise over the mountains. Amazing!

Joel as chameleon? Our rest stop for the day, at the Monkey Hill fire station. Hope the firemen don't try to grab me instead of their regular coats.

We're so happy. We just had corn.

Pandering for Ben, of course.

Why only the three of us at Deception Pass? We're the half of Team KOB that didn't get to stay at a fancy hotel in Port Townsend and sleep in to catch the late ferry. Of course, we also got to Orcas Island first.

More from day 2

The reward for the ridiculous climbs after we left the fire station is this awesome panorama at the top of Anacortes

We made it to the ferry dock! All I got from David was a lousy bagel, and only half of one at that. Two hours of ferry riding and 10 miles of riding still to go...

In case we weren't quite sure...

Duh!

Early morning on Orcas Island

Looking out over the farmland of Orcas. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Really.

Here's our team! Together again.

Early morning at West Bay on Orcas.

It would be nice to say that was our ship coming in, but it turns out it was somebody else's ship.

The finish line!

Paul!

David!

Sharon!

Karen!

Amy!

Parting shots

David, anyone who tries to offer cigarettes to riders on a lung association ride has to be the devil.
And we were right.

It turns out Paul's dream to open a small restaurant in the heart of Victoria finally came true...and here he's been stuffing himself with Clif bars all weekend.
